Regency House Party inspiroi
TV1:ssä alkoi tänään Regency House Party eli Kartanon vieraskutsut. Ensimmäisessä jaksossa näytettiin jo muutamaan otteeseen tuon ajan korsetteja ja tietysti jatkuvasti 1800-luvun alun pukuja, joten nyt tuli inspiraatio tehdä joko tuollainen korsetti, puku tai molemmat. Valitettavasti 1800-luvun alun muoti ei sovi vartalolleni laisinkaan. Ehkäpä joku muu haluaisi moiset.

Shadow of Memories
The beginning for this game wasn't promising: it was stupid enough to think there was no disc inside the drive no matter whether I started the game from the hard disk or the cdrom drive itself. A patch fixed that but it wasn't easy to find nor really a patch but a replacement from the main .exe. For those looking, the game is also known as Shadow of Destiny, at the patch can be found e.g. here.
The game itself seemed overrated also, the graphics are not very pretty (except for the lovely faces), puzzles are ridiculously easy and so far the game seems pretty shallow. The main idea of the game is nice though and reminded me of Jigsaw, which I unfortunately never finished.

Pelastetaan lakritsaturkkarit!
Jo jonkin aikaa, herkulliset ja ihanat lakritsaturkinpippurit, noin tuttavallisemmin lakritsaturkkarit, ovat olleet hankalasti saatavana vain sekoituksessa niitä ja hedelmänmakuisia turkkareita. Lakritsaturkinpippureiden ystävät ovat joutuneet ja joutuvat yhä noukkimaan suosikkinsa tuosta sekoituksesta. Noukkiminen on hankalaa ja hidasta ja niinpä hyviä karkkeja tulee syötyä vähemmän.
Pelastetaan siis lakritsaturkkarit! Teen lähiviikkoina adressin lakritsaturkinpippurien myymiseksi myös ihan omana karkkilaatunaan. Jos olet kiinnostunut auttamaan adressin jakamisessa tai nimien keräämisessä, jätä toki kommentti.

I'm tired of being called 'Sir' and frankly, 'Madam' is not much better. There really should be a nice non-gender specific word for addressing a business contact with. While we're at we, we could also replace the ancient 'Mr'/'Mrs'/'Ms' stuff with something more elegant. Maybe with plain 'M.', like in the book Hyperion (by Dan Simmons).

Audio & video bookmarks
Despite my efforts I haven't been able to find a bookmark-capable mp3 or dvd player for Linux. Are there really not any? When watching a long movie or listening to an audiobook, it would be really nice to be able to bookmark the spot you stopped at instead of having to write it down.

Being strong
Last week I took another walk to look at the ducksies and of course ended up photographing many of them. (For those of you wondering, nope, I don't have any thing about ducks, they just happen to be there to be photographed. I'd like to photograph dogs or cats or even people, but doing so requires permission from the subject or from the owner of the subject and that tends to spoil situational photographs.)
One of them had a broken wing which it kept semi-open. To my surprise, the little duck didn't seem to be the least bit bothered by that. It seemed to be living a fully functional life and swam and ate just like the rest of them. I don't think foxes live in the area, but if they do the duck should be rather safe in the water and when it sleeps it is probably not a much more tempting target than the other ducks.
I was impressed by that strong disabled (what an ill-fitting word!) duck and shot many photos of it. Unfortunately the most successful photo looks too gloomy to do its spirit proper justice.

Joku saisi kehittää tuoksuvaa lateksia latex-vaatteisiin. Löysin nimittäin kirjan jossa oli latex-vaatteiden tekemiseen liittyviä menetelmiä. Latex-vaatteet kun ovat kyllä kauniita ja kivan tuntuisia ainakin muiden päällä, mutta siitä hajusta en pidä ollenkaan, joten sai kirjakin jäädä hankkimatta, mutta laitoin sen Kirjasivulle kuitenkin.

Ruostetestin alustavat tulokset
Olen nyt pitänyt tiistaista saakka suolavedellä kosteana sekä kuorittua jousiteräsluuta että spiraaliluuta. Tänään aamulla jousiteräs vihdoin alkoi näyttää esimmäisiä ruostumisen merkkejä. Spiraaliluu on galvanointinsa ansiosta vielä oikein hyvävointinen.
Pitäisi joskus vielä kokeilla kuorimattomalla jousiteräsluulla.

Printing black
Epson Stylus C82 has a system that prevents replacing a non-empty cartridge. Ok, in theory (according to Epson support) pressing the ink button for 10 seconds is supposed to make the cardridges removable but that often the printer doesn't count the seconds right and it ends up cleaning the heads instead and using up some of the ink you do not want to replace. So, here I am, printing 100% black A4s over and over and over again, in hopes of using up the wrong black ink so that I can get the right black ink in.

Sleepy misfilings
Almost every night I get some science fiction or fantasy read out loud to me. During the last year or so, I have learned interesting things about how my brain handles (or doesn't!) the information fed too close to falling asleep. I usually don't have any recollection of what happened in the book during that last sleepy minute, but if it is read again, it all feels like I already know it. It doesn't feel new at all. However, if the events are described to me instead of re-read, they might or might not ring a bell.
I guess my brain misfiles most of the things on those oversleepy moments in some weird way. It would be nice to know exactly how and why.

Operaatio orkidean pelastus
Löysin eilen roskiksen päältä ison orkidean, joka näytti siltä että sitä ei ostamisen jälkeen oltu kasteltu ollenkaan. Ehkä sen oli joku saanut äitienpäivälahjaksi ja ollut pitämättä siitä, sillä jo pienellä kastelulla se olisi kukkinut vielä kuukausia.
Nyt kasvi on niin kuivunut että vain yhdessä juuressa huomasin vihreyttä. Ei siis ole ollenkaan varmaa pystyykö kasvi enää edes imemään vettä. Yritän silti, sillä terveenä se olisi kovin kaunis ja minulla ei ole samanlaisia kukkia kukkivaa vielä.

InkClub vs. DuraBrite
Ei mitenkään erityisen yllättäen, InkClubin muste ei vastannut Epsonin omaa DuraBrite-mustetta laisinkaan. DuraBrite oli mustempi, sormella kokeillen hieman kohollaan ja täysin vedenkestävä. InkClubin korvikemuste vuoti heti vesihanan alla, on harmahtava ja littana.
Pitänee niellä kokeilun kulut ja hankkia oikeaa mustetta jotta kirjekuoret ja arkistoitavat paperit voi tulostaa jonkinmoisella mielenrauhalla.
Arkistolaitos ei vielä DuraBritea arkistokelpoiseksi hyväksy, mutta pysyvyyden testaamiseen erikoistunut Wilhelm Imaging Research kertoi viime syksyllä DureBrite-musteilla tulostetun valokuvan säilyvän ilman huomattavaa haalistumista lasin takana jopa 80 vuotta.

Löytökissa
Hoitoomme päätyi eilen löytökissa. Olio oli selvästi säikky ja stressaantunut ja sen mielentila liikkuu lutuisen ja aggressiivisen välimaastossa niin vikkelästi ettei sen päällä olevia valjaita saa poistettua. Lisäksi eau de kissasta ovat kärsineet sänky ja sohva. Urgh.
Valjaissa oleva teksti oli niin kulunut ettei puhelinnumerosta saa muuta selkoa kuin että ensimmäinen ja kolmas numero ovat nollia. Ei kovin hyödyllistä.
Yöllä vuorotellen vahdittiin kissaa, joten sain jopa 4h unta...

Asenneongelma tai ongelmia asenteesta
Joskus on kurja ja kärttyinen olo ja mikä ikävintä, sen seurauksena saattaa katsella maailmaa asenteella, jolla helposti luo lisää kurjuutta ja kärttyisyyttä.
Eilen kaupungilla teki mieli ärähtää myyjälle joka tuntui säheltävän ärsytykseen saakka. Melkein jopa pahastuin kangaskaupan myyjälle joka on oikeasti avulias ja mukava. Molemmat ihan vaan sen takia että omassa asenteessani, tai paremminkin tavassani sillä hetkellä tulkita asioita, oli sillä hetkellä vikaa. Onneksi muistin että kärttyisänä tulkitsee asioita pieleen ja muistutin itseäni paremmista tulkinnoista. Hyvällä alulla siis olen, mutta vielä on parantamisen varaa.
Tulevaisuudessa tahdon olla ihminen jota on täysin mahdotonta loukata vääntämättä loukkausta pöydänjalasta... Ehkä jopa ihminen joka ei silloinkaan osaa loukkaantua. Mitä ihmeen hyötyä loukkaantumisen ja ärsyyntymisen taidoista muka on?

Shooting ducks and seagulls
Yesterday we went for walkies to a small stream to feed and shoot ducks. The ducks were timid, and feeding them was difficult as the more daring seagulls would fly in to steal the pieces of breads.
Here is what I learned about feeding ducks and shooting seagulls:
- The seagulls are attracted to the bigger pieces of bread: anything larger than 1 cm times 1 cm looks very yummy to them. Maybe they just cannot see the small crumbs. The ducks however are very happy with the small pieces, so if you want to give the timid ducks a chance, make your pieces as small as you can.
- When shooting the seagulls, make sure your camera is set to handle fast-moving targets. I forgot to do that, and still got some pretty nice pics (too large to display here) but they might have been spectacular with the right settings.
- Shoot often. The birds are not going to reposition themselves for another group shot.
- Choose the right side of the bank to start with. When you see nice situations to take photos of, it's really annoying to notice the nasty sun glare from the surface of the water.

Äidillä on Debian
Äidillänikin on nyt Debian-kone, sen nimi on Pinkku. Koska äitini on aika aloittelija tietokoneiden suhteen, ei ollut mitään syytä valita Windowsia tottumussyistä. Lisäksi kone on vanha ja heiveröinen, joten Linuxilla siitä saa paljon enemmän irti. Plus ylläpito on oikeasti yksinkertaisempaa ja helpompaa. Ja muutenkin Debian on hyvä.

Camera got mounted
The Konica (Konica Revio KD-420Z aka. Minolta Dimage G400) camera I got was very easy to get working with Debian. I added some modules based on the USB Mass Storage HOWTO added an fstab entry and it worked. Pretty.
Are all digital cameras this easy or did I just choose a really good one?

Blinking green led
If your newly purchased Minolta Dimage G400 or Konica Revio KD-420Z refuses to switch on and instead blinks the green viewfinder led at you in morse-like fashion, panic not. It's just out of batteries.

Perhosorkideat
Molemmat perhosorkideani kukkivat nyt samaan aikaan. Se tarkoittaa ettei ole toiveita lisäorkideoista ennen kuin nämä lopettavat ja nämä tuppaavat kukkia aina kuukausia. Ei niin että se olisi paha asia.
Muiden kukkien kanssa olen vaihtelevasti tumpelo, mutta perhosorkideoiden kanssa menee hyvin. Niillä kun on yksinkertainen sielunelämä: Jos niitä unohtaa kastella ja pitää niitä hieman liian kirkkaassa valossa, ne muuttuvat vähän penseiksi. Sitten kun niille taas antaa vettä, ne ajattelevat: "Jos nyt lisäännyn, niin ehkä lapsillani on parempi elämä paikassa, jossa on vähän vähemmän aurinkoa ja säännöllisemmin sadetta". Ja sitten ne kukkivat.

RAID reconstruction speed limit
Tired of reconstruction after raidhotadd being so slow and literally taking ages? Apart from a reasonable chunk size, you can get those bits paddle on by doing echo 1000 >/proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min where the number is something larger than what you have in /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min at the moment but still reasonable.
Do that before hotraidadd. Doing it during doesn't help a bit.

Näin luki Konica Revio KD-420Z:n käyttöohjeessa. Mikä oikeus heillä on rajoittaa kuvien käyttöä? Ja kuka ihme on kuvien haltija, ellei se ihminen joka ne otti ja jonka hallussa kuvat ovat? Tavaramerkkilainsäädäntö toki tuota rajoittaisi, mutta jotenkin tuntuu kovasti sumuverholta tämä.

Degrees of Blurriness
The first 10 minutes after inserting a toric contact lens into my eye are weird: the degree of blurriness varies and everything looks subtly alive for a while.
It's worth the wait though, as I really like being frameless.
Why don't they make 24/7 toric contact lenses? Or do they?

Sähköriippuvuus
Aikaisemmin päivällä oli sähkökatkos. Kone humahti nukkumaan, hiljaisuus laskeutui ja tekeminen pysähtyi.
Tietokone oli poissa pelistä, samoin ompelukone. Sirkkaprässi odotti irrottamistaan.
Vasta myöhemmin tajusin ne monet asiat lukemisen ja juttelun lisäksi, joita sähkökatkon aikana olisi voinut tehdä.
