Will Optimus keyboard change how GUIs work?
Last night I realized that the Optimus keyboard has a good chance of changing how GUIs work. Why have a menu on the screen when you can have the menu on the keyboard? You do not even have to give normal keys to be pressed unless the user is in a text field.

Kohtuulliset kuulokkeet halvalla
Kaipasin toisia kuulokkeita, nyt tällä hetkellä töihin mutta ehkä myöhemmin kannettavan musiikkisoittimen kaveriksi. Päädyin Philipsin valmistamiin HL145 sankakuulokeisiin, jotka ovat paketin mukaisesti keveät päässä. Äänessäkään ei ole näin maallikolla suuremmin valittamista, ja hintaa 9,90 euroa.
Alunperin ajattelin että haluaisin nappikuulokkeet, jos vaan löytyisi sopivan kokoiset pieniin korviin, mutta en kyllä maksa 45 euroa sellaisistakaan nappikuulokkeista, varsinkaan Sonylle!

OS X, Terminal and alt key problems
Today was my first day with OS X. When I finally tried ssh from it, I noticed the backspace didn't work, Scandinavian letters produced a mess, backspace just didn't work and either did alt. An irssi hell, I tell you.
Following steps offered a cure. Terminal-->Window Settings... then from drop menu Keyboard and check Delete key sends backspace and Use option key as a meta key. Then choose Emulation from the dropdown menu and uncheck Escape non-ASCII characters. After that is just works.

I just now discovered the joy of Galeon bookmarklets. At least the in-page bookmark bookmarklet is handy when reading long web pages. I haven't yet tested whether it survives Galeon being shut down meanwhile. I hope it will.

Cycling in a skirt
I like long wide skirts. I also like cycling. These two do not unfortunately combine that easily, so currently I'm looking for ways to skirtproof my bike and/or to bikeproof my skirts.
Tried so far:
- Attaching the front and back of the skirt together between the legs with a rubberband. (Works, but not for extremely wide skirts. Shortens the skirt a bit, making it a bit cold on colder weather. Needs to be attached carefully or the rubberband will fall off.)
- Pinning excess fabric to the front with a safety pin or a brooch. (Works on very wide skirts. Causes holes in knitted fabrics. Does not work on stiff fabrics as then the skirt for some reason hikes up ver insistently. Doesn't work at all on narrower skirts.)
To be tried:
- Skirtguards on the back wheel (Not easily available. Hameverkko in Finnish)
- Enclosed chainguards (Not sure whether there can be retrofitted at all.)
Furthers ideas are very welcome.

Quickcam Express II
I got my Quickcam Express II working with spca5xx drivers. That was easy. Gnomemeeting now shows video. Unfortunately the video is a bit yellowish and the gnomemeeting controls for adjusting colour/brightness/contrast seem to be rather nonresponsive and always revert to the old settings if I move away from the video screen. There is probably some trick for this.

Further experiments on body hair
I wanted to learn which bits I prefer smooth, which hairy and why, so I did some experimentation. I cannot figure out why I didn't do it earlier. When I first got armpit hair, I watched it grow, then started shaving and kept shaving, without much thinking why. I just assumed that's what I wanted.
Now, after some experimentation I know I prefer smooth armpits for the looks and the reduced sweatiness but don't like shaving them, at least not with a razor.
I wonder how many women just shave and never have tested their own reasons for it.

Sometimes one needs to take steps back in order to go forward
I found a site, learn2type.com, that offers a free typing speed test and some lessons for touch typing. At least the basic features seem to be free of cost. Unfortunately they do not support Finnish/Swedish keyboard layout so their basic homeline exercises require me to use shift and even alt-gr.
As the solution I jumped to the further exercises. I noticed that at the moment typing is significantly slower than typing using my normal 'any finger goes' method. I'm pretty fast with my own method (about 40 wpm). However I think I just need to tolerate temporary slowness in order to get faster in the future.
As touch typing is a physical skill, I bet learning it as a kid would have been much easier, but better late than never.

Why are shaved armpits and legs considered feminine?
Until couple of weeks ago I had been shaving my armpit hair since it started growing. Then I stopped for a while and now I have trouble understanding why it is consider so feminine, so 'normal' to shave legs, armpits and even pubic hair. Shaving is a lot of work. The stubble causes itching. Razors cost money. And the result is not perfecly smooth anyway, except maybe on the legs.

Riding a bicycle in London
I visited London last week and got to do some cycling on a borrowed Brompton. The Brompton was wonderful and I really want one, but that's not what this entry is about.
I was surprised how easy cycling in London was. The car traffic seemed to be ok with people cycling behind them and the traffic in general was moving at a relatively slow speed, making the whole experience feel a lot safer than cycling in traffic in Turku (I don't have enough experience on cycling in Helsinki to form a good opinion on it).

The joy of shopping for clothes
Today for the probably first time in my life I experienced the joy of shopping for clothing. I found 6 nice looking garments for total of 6 euros from UFF sale, didn't try any of them on before buying them. The result: 3 garments that are usable as such, two require small fixes (new top button, replacing or removing the shoulder pads) and one does not look nice on me but the fabric can be used for something. No skirts amongst my finds unfortunately but two very nice dresses.

Migraine
Migraine is probably one of the most efficient way to stop me from being efficient. I can deal the pain, but the 'light' effect keeps me from doing anything useful very well as I cannot see very well when I have it.
Edit: It seems to be fading now, only after 20 minutes. Maybe the one eye integration thing actually works. Also seems like the vision in my left eye is really blurry compared to the vision in my right eye. More so than I remembered. Maybe I should get my vision checked again.

Existing Linux CAD programs: PythonCAD
Version 0.1.25 has no bezier curves, no snapping or many of the other classic CAD features. I think it might turn out well given some time but at this point I wouldn't consider PythonCAD as a good starting point for ClothingCAD.
BTW, what is it with bezier curves? They seem to be missing from most Linux CAD programs I have looked into and on the other hand Dia has them.

So far I have had no luck playing Dual Layer DVDs on my computer. Are they supposed to work? Would a newer drive do the trick?
Correction:
Matrix Revolutions seems to be Dual Layer and it played fine, but most
do not... not even when they look stratch free and fine.

Hiding binary
Lately I have been on and off thinking about hiding binary code into decorative motifs that can be used e.g. in jewellery. I think this thinking is fuelled by my ring envy - I too want a date hidden in my ring. The problem is the motif either needs to be small or very simple to allow more than couple of zeros and ones to be fitted in a design as small as a ring in a way that a human can still easily read, and I'm rather fond of vines and florals myself.

Yskiminen
Allekirjoittaneella tuntuu olevan jotenkin alikehittynyt yskärefleksi (noin yhdeksässä flunssassa kymmenestä lima tuntuu pahalta kurkussa mutta ei yskitä ei), joten olen nyt etsinyt ja löytänytkin ohjeita yskimiseen:
- Istu ja nojaa hieman eteenpäin.
- Hengitä sisään hitaasti ja syvään.
- Pidätä hengitystä kaksi sekuntia.
- Yskäise kerran irrottaaksesi liman.
- Yskäise toistamiseen jotta lima kulkeutuu ulos. Toista tarvittaessa.
- Istu vartalo hieman taivutettuna eteenpäin.
- Hengitä sisään.
- Jännitä vatsalihaksia joka yskäisyllä.
- Yski syvään suu hieman auki. Yskäisyjen pitäisi olla syviä, ei vain kurkussa tuntuvia.
- Hengitä jokaisen yskäisyn jälkeen.

Worldskills in Helsinki
I was today watching the Worldskills competition in Helsinki. It was very interesting. I had wonderful time there and feel tempted to go back tomorrow. I'm slightly undecided though, as I do not yet have company for going there tomorrow, and it would easily take most of my day. Aldo, I think one does not yet learn tomorrow about the results and I'm afraid that the winning work will not be properly shown to the audience, so there could be lack of closure of a sort.

Televisio hajosi
Sen jälkeen kun videot sanoivat sopimuksensa irti, olen monta kertaa harmitellut TV:n olemassaoloa, sillä koin usein joutuvani valitsemaan kivan TV-ohjelman ja jonkin muun kivan välillä. Nyt kun televisio hajosi alkuviikosta, en ollutkaan oletetun iloinen vaan lievästi pottuuntunut.

Tänään TV4:ltä tulee Jäähyväiset tytöille (Kiss the Girls), josta jostakin syystä pidin hyvin paljon ainakin ensi näkemältä.
I got my printer downgrade
I now have a HP LaserJet 4 SiMX, which prints prettily, rather fast and easily. I haven't yet figured out how to do duplex printing. And the machine is huge. And I mean huge. About 75 cm x 60 cm with the paper cassettes included. I am not sure it will fit into my life in the long run, but it does work well.

Display card upgrade, performance downgrade
I got a new display card, Radeon 9250 to replace my old Radeon 9000 as the old card most most likely acting up. To my surprise this was a glxgears performance downgrade from 1400 FPS to just 700-800 FPS. I'm still hoping to find some ways of improving the performance. I have no good guesses at the moment but I'll at least try ATI's own commercial drivers, though with Radeon 9000 I found them slower that going the dri-trunk way. With the current card at the moment I'm using just normal X.

Miksi vaatetangottomatkin vaatekaapit ja komerot ovat nyrkkisääntöisesti ainakin 50 cm, useimmin 60 cm syviä? Tuntuu että ensimmäinen 30 - 40 cm tulee tehokkaaseen käyttöön ja sen jälkeen jää joko tyhjää tilaa tai sellainen limbo johon hukkuu kaikenmaailman tavarat. Päivitys 26.5.2005: Ikean PAX-sarjasta näyttää löytyvän myös 35 cm syvä runko, mutten nyt olekaan enää varma että se on työhuoneeseeni se oikea vaihtoehto, kun seinätila on rajallista.

Sata kiloa spiraaliluita
Eteiseen saapui juuri arviolta sata kiloa spiraaliluita. Luut ovat vaihtelevaa laatua ja eripituisia, osittain keveitä yksikierteisiä ja osittain normaalia tuplaspiraalia. Portaissa reidet aina huusivat leipää kun osallistuin noiden kantamiseen, mutta nyt olen hyvin onnellinen nainen. (Vaikken kyllä ihan vielä tahdo edes ajatella noiden kantamista varastoon).

After latest upgrade my galeon doesn't seem to have a scroll bar anymore. I must admit I like it. I can of course scroll with my mousewheel or with arrow or page-up/page-down keys. I wonder whether it is a bug or a feature.

Today I tried to get an urgent fax sent through eFax. It really took about 30 tries as I got "The document contains no data" on the first roughly 29 times. After that the fax finally got sent and guess what... It mangled my Scandinavian characters to broken goo! Argh. I'd move to another fax company but it seems there is no proper competition for eFax.

Linear non-linearity
Very often games are called non-linear but actually the hero is still supposed to follow the main story line in a certain way, they just get to choose whether or not they take some side quests as well. To me non-linear means at least variable endings. Almost by default the best non-linear games I have seen have been interactive fiction (aka. text adventures). I was told that it's probably the expense of investing into graphics and sounds that only some players would see that keeps the game houses producing mostly semi-linear games.
Morrowind, which I'm now playing is a rather nice semi-linear game, but some far there has not been any significant depth to the side quests. Rather, they have all been "do this to advance" or "be a dogooder today". I wonder what happened if my hero killed the person currently most important to the main quests... After all, the hero is not all all happy about what has been destined for her.

Hieman kauniimpaa valoa
Kylppärin peilikaapin loisteputki sammui ja tänään ostimme uuden. Valitsin uuden loisteputken olemaan vähän luonnollisemman värinen kuin perusloisteputket, mutta kotona kävi ilmi karmea totuus: peilikaapin muovinen valonsuoja oli kellertynyt niin että lopputuloksena olevassa valossa silti näytti kuka tahansa ihan puolikuoliaalta. Onneksi netistä kävi ilmi että Polaria-peilikaappeihin saa ostettua uuden valonsuojan, ja hinnankin pitäisi jäädä alle 20 euron. Kyllä sen verran voi välillä ihminen käyttää siihen että näyttää kauniilta.

Upset and sad
Those of you who know me know I'm direct, absurdly concerned and interested in people, sometimes against my better judgement, and often a bit nitpicky about details. Some of you love me for those traits... Some hate me for those things, I think.
Today I am still up at almost 4:30 o'clock at night, almost regretting saying that not all punched eyelet holes are ugly and weak and that a skilled person deserves a skilled person's salary. I do not get it at all. I try to embrace Let It Be but as always, I want to understand what happened... Futile. Sad. Upset.
Especially this time as my every attempt of assuming miscommunication instead of malice was seen as malice.
I was invited to oogle at the Oscar gala with some rather nice people. I didn't go because I was going to have a busy day tomorrow and was going to need the sleep. Didn't go, didn't get the sleep. I dread tomorrow.

En minä vaan muista lapsena, enkä nyt aikuisenakaan, kuulleeni yhdestäkään tapauksesta jossa olisi lapselle käynyt pahasti (tullut kaapatuksi, pahoinpidellyksi tai asunto ryöstetyksi) hänen avattuaan oven aikuiselle. Onko nyt tilanne oikeasti eri, ja maailma paljon vaarallisempi, vai ovatko ihmiset vain epäluuloisempia? Oviketjua toki osattiin käyttää ennenkin.

Onko se vain typerää riskinottoa minulta vai onko jokin syy miksen niitä tarvitsisi? Tunnistaako ihminen itse tarvitseeko lääkkeitä ja terapiaa vai näkeekö sen parhaiten ulkopuolinen asiantuntija?

L'Oreal on enemmän kuin luulinkaan
Turhamaisuuksissani kokeilin L'Orealin uutta True Match meikkivoidetta eilen (myyjä olisi suositellut N1:tä, kädenselällä C1 näytti paremmalta, mutta olen aina kuvitellut olevani enemmän kellerväihoinen). Tänään uteliaisuuttani katsellessani L'Orealin nettisivuja huomasin että merkkejä tallissa on muitakin kuin L'Oreal: Biotherm, Maybelline, Helena Rubinstein, Lancome, Vichy, Shu Uemura ja noin tusina muuta. Pitää jatkossa katsoa kilpailevatko Maybelline ja L'Oreal meikkimainokset keskenään vai tietääkö oikea käsi mitä vasen tekee.

Miksi ihmeessä kelloradioissa, joita pidetään etenkin juuri yöpöydillä, on usein niin kovin kirkkaat ledit? Etenkin sarastusvalossa tämä on hassua.
