"PM me!"

On #ubuntu and #kubuntu one often sees people use the acronym pm. After initial shock I figured out they mean "private message". That is /msg to the dinosaurs like me. But where did this PM stuff come from? Does some irc client actually support /pm ?

Trendi-lehdestä soittivat ja onnittelivat voitosta jossakin arvonnassa. Pitkän onnittelun ja hehkutuksen jälkeen kävi ilmi että olin 'voittanut' puolentoista vuoden Trendit hintaan 50 euroa. En jäänyt kuuntelemaan että olisiko 'voitto' ollut automaattisesti jatkuva kestotilaus.

Idiot Proof Diet

I liked Idiot Proof Diet in general, though didn't like the way it made eating non-social. But what sucked was the Fruits and Vegetables Day. Seems absurd that there is one day when you can eat only fruits and vegetables and one meal a day less than on the other days. Joule underdose, demotivation and misery. And end of IPD for me.

Energiansäästölamput plafondissa

Uuteen plafondivalaisimeen menisi 3x60W lamput. Valitettavasti siihen en tunnu menevän vastaavan valotehon energiansäästölamput. Ihan pienimpiä en ole vielä kokeillut, mutta harmittaa vähän jo. Pitäisi olla energiansäästölamppumerkintäpakko, tai jotain.

My DVD drive sucks

The DVD drive in my computer sucks and refuses to read most burned DVDs, library DVDs and rentable DVDs. I should get a new one soon, preferebly one that can burn my backups as well.

Junan aulassa oli äiti ja vauva. Vauva itkeskeli sellaista pingaus-itkua ("jos nyt vähän itkeskelen silleen kokeillakseni, ehkä joku leikkii mun kanssa sitten"). Junan saapuessa asemalle aulaan tuli ihmisiä, joista yksi, kauneusmessuilla ollut neliskymppinen täti sanoi juuri ennen astumistaan ulos junasta töykeällä äänellä vauvan äidille: "Onnelliset vauvat eivät itke".

Mitä puppua! Ja hei täti, onnelliset ihmiset eivät ole tuolla tavalla töykeitä!

Cycling in a skirt

I like long wide skirts. I also like cycling. These two do not unfortunately combine that easily, so currently I'm looking for ways to skirtproof my bike and/or to bikeproof my skirts.

Tried so far:

• Attaching the front and back of the skirt together between the legs with a rubberband. (Works, but not for extremely wide skirts. Shortens the skirt a bit, making it a bit cold on colder weather. Needs to be attached carefully or the rubberband will fall off.)
• Pinning excess fabric to the front with a safety pin or a brooch. (Works on very wide skirts. Causes holes in knitted fabrics. Does not work on stiff fabrics as then the skirt for some reason hikes up ver insistently. Doesn't work at all on narrower skirts.)

To be tried:

• Skirtguards on the back wheel (Not easily available. Hameverkko in Finnish)
• Enclosed chainguards (Not sure whether there can be retrofitted at all.)

Furthers ideas are very welcome.

Volunteer usefulness ends at 30?

It seems that for most longterm volunteer positions there is a requirement for the person to be not more than 30 years of age. I feel very frustrated by that limit as I'm going to be 30 within 6 months.

Does volunteer usefulness end at 30 and if so, why?

Ruskea pahvi paperinkeräysastioissa

Ketuttaa kun ihmiset pistävät ruskeaa pahvia paperinkeräysastioihin vaikka niiden päällä lukee "ei ruskeaa pahvia eikä roskia". Pahimmillaan menee kai pilalle koko satsi paperia.

Yleensä vietän sitten joitakin minuutteja pyrkien poistamaan kaiken ruskean pahvin, mutta se on rasitus.

Migraine

Migraine is probably one of the most efficient way to stop me from being efficient. I can deal the pain, but the 'light' effect keeps me from doing anything useful very well as I cannot see very well when I have it.

Edit: It seems to be fading now, only after 20 minutes. Maybe the one eye integration thing actually works. Also seems like the vision in my left eye is really blurry compared to the vision in my right eye. More so than I remembered. Maybe I should get my vision checked again.

Saunalahti arpoo kännyköitä arvonnassa johon ei voi osallistua jos ei hyväksy suoramarkkinointia ja tekstiviestimarkkinointia. Ei tuollainen voi olla sallittua, vai voiko?

eFax sux

Today I tried to get an urgent fax sent through eFax. It really took about 30 tries as I got "The document contains no data" on the first roughly 29 times. After that the fax finally got sent and guess what... It mangled my Scandinavian characters to broken goo! Argh. I'd move to another fax company but it seems there is no proper competition for eFax.

Just what is it that I'm doing wrong

Lately it seems that whenever I express some kind of fondness towards people or what they do (missing, admiration of their character or their work ect) they tend to take it as an insult or attack. This luckily excludes the people who know me by heart. Otherwise I would be a very sad girl indeed.

I just wish that someone told me what I'm doing wrong.

Upset and sad

Those of you who know me know I'm direct, absurdly concerned and interested in people, sometimes against my better judgement, and often a bit nitpicky about details. Some of you love me for those traits... Some hate me for those things, I think.

Today I am still up at almost 4:30 o'clock at night, almost regretting saying that not all punched eyelet holes are ugly and weak and that a skilled person deserves a skilled person's salary. I do not get it at all. I try to embrace Let It Be but as always, I want to understand what happened... Futile. Sad. Upset.

Especially this time as my every attempt of assuming miscommunication instead of malice was seen as malice.

I was invited to oogle at the Oscar gala with some rather nice people. I didn't go because I was going to have a busy day tomorrow and was going to need the sleep. Didn't go, didn't get the sleep. I dread tomorrow.

Kirkkaat ledit kelloradioissa

Miksi ihmeessä kelloradioissa, joita pidetään etenkin juuri yöpöydillä, on usein niin kovin kirkkaat ledit? Etenkin sarastusvalossa tämä on hassua. Soleil SunAlarm on muuten ihan kiva, muutamaa käyttöliittymäkämmiä lukuunottamatta, mutta sen vihreät ledit ovat niin kirkkaita että peitän kellonajan voidepullolla yöksi.

Tired of being called 'Sir'

I'm tired of being called 'Sir' and frankly, 'Madam' is not much better. There really should be a nice non-gender specific word for addressing a business contact with. While we're at we, we could also replace the ancient 'Mr'/'Mrs'/'Ms' stuff with something more elegant. Maybe with plain 'M.', like in the book Hyperion (by Dan Simmons).
