And now the breakage / Nyt rikkoutuu

Some of the old Finnish entries finally broke today as yours truly finally started moving this blog to UTF-8. Yes, I know, most of them are broken now. Yes, something is being done about it. No, I'm in hurry to get it done.

Brokenness ahead - character sets

Colours

On the oldfashioned monitor of my home computer, the category colours show clearly. On my laptop, some of them (e.g. the ones for Sense of Wonder and meta) are barely noticeable. I wonder how most people see them.

Category problem continues

Again lately I have had problem putting things into the exactly right categories. If it bothers you and you have a solution, comment and whine. Otherwise I won't believe you exist. (According to website stats most of the visitors are likely to be spammers from USA.)

I set up a subcategory for GarmentCAD in hopes of getting the project well on its way.
Edit: And as you can see there is an interesting category bug as a result: "Bits and ClothingCAD" instead of "Bits and PCs :: ClothingCAD". It seems to happen when category tree plugin has $iWantIndents set to 0 and disappears when some of the other options are taken into use instead. It being midnight I didn't feel like going bug hunting more than I need to and submitting bugs towards bloxsom plugins is always a lot of hassle compared to the good old reportbug.

Categories

Sometimes it is very difficult to decide into which category to put things into. After all, sometimes something falls into two categories, one for the feel and one for the subject. However, if I had possibility of putting an entry into multiple categories, I wouldn't know what to do about them colourwise.

Comments temporarily disabled

Comments were temporarily disabled due to a cross site scripting problem in the plugin.

In short, the problem in writebacks was even worse in comments. However, a patch is available, thanks to Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho.

For the new and improved comment plugin you'll also need HTML::Entities. That's libhtml-parser-perl for us apt-get people.

The 16 o'clock dip

The access statistics of this blog have a very clear dip at 16 o'clock. I guess that's when people leave their workplaces and are not yet home at their computers. The high point is at 14 o'clock, the peak hour of "I wish I could get home already" -feelings for those working 8 to 16, I guess. How surprisingly unrandom.

commects_recent trouble

It seems that comments_recent plugin doesn't work well with a non-root located, multicategory blog. It seems to ignore the blosxom $url (the base url of the blog). Even with relative urls it does not work if the reader of the blog is currently reading a page of different category.

I guess I should give it a solid kick in hopes of getting it to work or write something similar myself. Or then just live without such functionality, as people very rarely comment on the blog entries anyway.

Putting pictures and blog texts under Creative Commons

Does it make sense to share log texts under some Creative Commons variant? What about nice but non-professional photos? Attribution-NoDerivs-NonCommercial License is the one I have been thinking for the blog and Attribution-ShareAlike (or just plain Attribution) for the photos.

It's unlikely anyone would want to copy my blog, but perhaps someone might have uses for my ducksies or squarrels.

Blosxom

Päätin kokeilla Blosxomia ainakin hiukan. Kiitos Antti-Juhani Kaijanaholle ideasta ja avusta.

Jaa että miksi Blosxom, kun Movable Type ei kelvannut? Lisenssi. MT:n lisenssistä sai sen kuvan että jopa omasta firmasta kertominen MT:n kautta oli harmaata aluetta. Blosxom taas ei rajoita moista, joten saan olla blogissa kahden oman itsesensuurini kanssa. :)
